A new event for the Gloucester Daffodil Festival has been approved by the American Daffodil Society. The ADS Judges' School 1 will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019, at Brent and Becky's Bulbs, 7900 Daffodil Lane. To become a certified judge for American Daffodil Society sanctioned shows you must pass three schools within five years. Schools 1, 2 and 3 are held across the U.S. Very few are offered each year so candidates for certification must often travel great distances. Nancy Fuchs, a certified judge, had to travel to Dalla to take her third school. Dianne Spence of Williamsburg and Gloucester Point, a student judge, has taken Schools 2 & 3, but found it difficult to find a School 1.

Students will be coming to Gloucester from near and far to begin their certification process. Daffodil growers and exhibitors will be able to audit the school to learn valuable information about the culture and showing daffodils. Certified judges will also attend to refresh, a requirement for continuing certification.

Instructors for the school are Anne Donnell Smith of Stevenson, Maryland, Glenna Graves of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Scott Bally of Bethesda, Maryland, certified judges and instructors of the ADS. All these judges are familiar with the Gloucester community having judged here for many years. Experts in their fields, they will make learning fun. Anne Donnell, quoted in the April 2018 issue of Southern Living, said "Daffodil people aren't fussy people."

Peggy Bowditch and Nancy Fuchs are co-chairmen of the school. Serving on the committee to conduct the school are Dianne Spence and Betty Barr Ould. Having the school at Brent and Becky's Bulb is an added draw to people in the daffodil world, where the Heaths are held in high esteem.

A registration form and class information can be found on the festival web site www.daffodilfestivalva.org or by contacting peggyb72@gmail.com.

Students attending the school will be arriving in Gloucester on Thursday to study blooms for an identification test. They will stay to enter the show on Friday and Saturday.
