Sangria - a terrific crinum with dark, glossy, purplish foliage topped with rosy spikes of flowers; 2'-3'; whz7-10; tissue culture
Although the flowers of Crinums look like lilies, they are more akin to but much larger than the regular Hippeastrum and, therefore, have huge bulbs which are pest proof like other members of the amaryllis family. Clusters of long-lasting, large flowers bloom and rebloom in succession in late summer on 24"-36" stems, towering above its sword-shaped leaves. It prefers rich soil but doesn't seem to care whether it's in a normal flower border that is subject to drought conditions or in a tropical garden where moisture is present. Resents being disturbed, so don't move it, unless necessary once it's been established. Wonderfully fragrant, it's a great companion to many perennials and other bulbs in the border. 20-24 cm bulbs; 1 per sq. ft.; zones 7-10. If you live in a colder area, mulch heavily or plant in a container so it can be moved inside easily during the winter like an agapanthus or hibiscus.
