superba 'Rothschildiana' - bright 'fire truck' red with small, lemon yellow edge; 1902.
This pest proof exotic, summer bloomer, native to tropical Africa and Asia, has extremely reflexed petals that reveal prominent, 'long, eyelash' pistils and stamens. Stems of 18"-36" cling to arbors, trellises or strong stemmed neighbors with the aid of curly tendrils at its leaf tips and each petal, folding back, creates the illusion of butterflies in the garden. This vivid beauty is glorious in a container in full sun and well-drained soil and in the garden. 1 per sq. ft.; zones 8-10, but will overwinter in zone 7 in a protected location with extra mulch.
