Summer 2010

Summer 2010 > Bulbs > Genus List > Polianthes tuberosa > Agavaceae[Printer Friendly Version]

Single Mexican - single form; luscious fragrance.

Lots of tubular, super fragrant, white blossoms with incredibly thick, waxy substance bloom on top of 18"-36" stems with foliage that is 1' tall. If the bulbs are planted in the spring, they bloom in late summer. However, when they overwinter, which they sometimes do here, they bloom in early summer and seem to last forever. Every summer garden and every flower arrangement should include tuberoses. Your friends will be ecstatic when you include a tuberose in the arrangements you take them! Bulbs can be started indoors for early bloom, and if you live in a climate with a short summer season, you must start them inside to assure you of the 'to die for' experience of seeing and smelling them. Victorian favorite; used pre-1600; 14-18 cm bulbs; 3 per sq. ft.; zones 8-10; has overwintered in our zone 7 garden with extra winter mulch.
