The peacocks and parrots of the bulb world, tulips offer more sizes, shapes and colors than you can imagine for any type of garden design scheme. They are an incredible source of inexpensive color for the garden. Almost every color in the spectrum is available except true blue. Intensity of the colors sometimes varies according to climate and even from one season to another. Divided into 15 divisions usually depending on shape, bloom time or heritage. The explanation and description of each division is found in quotes (" ") and in caps on the following pages and was taken directly from the Royal General Bulbgrowers' Association's 1996 publication of the Classified List and International Register of Tulip Names, Johan van Scheepen, editor. Plant 4 × their height deep (8"–10" for regular sized tulips; 4"–6" for small tulips); bulbs are 12/+cm unless otherwise noted.
Pre-Cooled BulbsFor those of you who live in areas where a lack of cold winters affects spring-flowering bulbs, the selections below may be good choices for your garden. These are the same bulbs we ship to everyone else, but they will be placed in our cooler when they arrive in Virginia and held until planting time, mid Dec to mid Jan, depending on whether you have some winter cold or none at all. (For more information on each cultivar, refer to the catalogue or our website).
(Please note: If you order these, you must plant them as soon as they arrive, as the benefit of pre-chilling diminishes each day they are out of the cooler. To ensure timely delivery, there will be an additional 2nd Day Air shipping charge, billed after shipment. If you do receive winter temperatures, these bulbs must either be planted early enough to root before the ground freezes or grown in pots that are protected from extreme cold.) Check our website for directions on how to use these bulbs for indoor or outdoor layered containers!)
Double Early Tulips"Semi-double to double flowered cultivars, mainly short stemmed and early flowering." Long lasting, peony or roselike flowers that combine wonderfully with daffodils, muscari and hyacinths; excellent for forcing and great for bedding, planters and window boxes; 12/+ cm unless otherwise noted; whz 3-8.
