Grown in South Africa where their autumn is our spring, these hippeastrums, if planted in early November, should be raring to go and be in bloom by Christmas! These hippeastrums have been bred specifically for pot culture and, therefore,
foliage and flowers usually emerge at the same time. Stems are shorter and stouter so that the flowers do not topple over and are more proportional to the container. After they have finished blooming, if you keep them in a sunny window and don’t let
them dry out, after danger of frost, they are the PERFECT size for planting in the garden in areas where they’ll be winter hardy to zone 7.
‘Sonata-types’ - mid size flowers for South African varieties, flowers average 5" in diameter; 20/22 cm bulbs.
‘Sonatini-types’ -smallest flowers of the 3 varieties, flowers average 3" in diamater ; 18/20 cm bulbs.
'Symphony-types’ - largest of the 3, flowers average 7" in diameter; 24/26 cm bulbs.
All South African varieties are known for lots of stems and lots of flowers! Double form flowers usually have two to three times the number of petals
as the standard varieties.
Family: Amaryllidaceae | Nickname: Amaryllis
