Every year when we flip the calendar, we get a renewed sense of excitement for the planting seasons ahead here at Brent & Becky’s. With a new year comes new opportunities to plant, play, experiment, and have fun in the garden—and isn’t that really what life as a gardener is all about?
Check Out Our 2022 Bulb Catalogue Highlights
We are so excited to share some feature items from our bulb catalogue that we simply can’t wait to plant in our gardens this year. And, we’d venture to guess that you’re going to love them just as much as we do!
1. Allium ‘Millenium’
There are over 700 species within the genus Allium, all of which produce flowers and foliage that have an onion-like fragrance. We grow some of them to eat, while others are strictly ornamental. ‘Millenium’ is a compact, ornamental variety that claimed the title of Perennial Plant of the Year in 2018.
A hybrid variety, Millenium is a true bulb that forms a clump that you can divide in the spring or fall. Pollinators just love its spherical, showy purple blooms! They bloom throughout the summer, attracting bees and butterflies alike while keeping unwanted critters like deer and rabbits at bay.
2. Crinum powellii
This showy, fragrant flower is often referred to as Swamp Lily, Cape Lily, or Cape Coast Lily, which can be a little misleading. While they look like Lilies, they are actually a little closer to your average Hippeastrum. Their bulbs are gigantic and critter-proof like much of the rest of the Amaryllis family.
They produce gorgeous clusters of trumpet-like flowers, which will treat you to several bloom cycles throughout the summer season. These beauties tend to enjoy moist, rich soil, but mature bulbs will tolerate slightly drier soil conditions. Cape Coast Lilies are winter hardy to zones 7 through 10, and they don’t like to be transplanted—so be sure to select your planting location with care!
3. Echinacea ‘Pow Wow Wildberry’ (Coneflower)
These North American native perennials featured in our 2022 bulb catalogue age like a fine wine! Their striking magenta blooms fit beautifully into beds, borders, wildflower gardens, meadows, and even containers. They are deer-resistant, drought-resistant once established, and have a wonderful spreading habit.
When planted in mass, these gorgeous Coneflowers will attract tons of pollinators to your yard, and they are beautiful as both dried and cut flowers. We suggest deadheading spent blooms throughout the growing season to encourage even more flowers to grace your garden.
4. Lilium ‘Forever Susan’
If you are on the hunt for a true show-stopper in the garden, look no further than this stunning Asiatic Lily. Its petals are made up of vibrant orange edges which blend into a deep purple hue that is just drop-dead gorgeous—an absolute must for the Lily-loving gardeners out there.
Lilies are a summer favorite in general, offering up a variety of forms, heights, sizes, bloom in zones 3 through 10, and enjoy full sun to partial shade.
5. Lycoris radiata
A beautiful bulb that requires a little bit of patience, Lycoris radiata (commonly referred to as a Hurricane Lily or Spider Lily) gets better and better every year. Vibrant red, spidery-looking flowers bloom on naked stems in early fall.
We ship these heirloom bulbs out in late-May to early June for best results and recommend planting them as soon as they arrive in order to keep their roots from drying out. Spider Lilies are critter-proof, enjoy well-drained soil, and part sun to part shade.
6. Monarda ‘Raspberry Wine’
Often referred to as Bee Balm or Wild Bergamot, these raspberry-red blooms are another gorgeous choice for your pollinator garden. They will attract tons of butterflies and hummingbirds as they flower from mid-summer to early fall.
This fragrant, herbaceous perennial is quite resistant to powdery mildew (a common problem with other Monarda cultivars) and does a lovely job at fending off unwanted visitors like deer.
7. Muhlenbergia capillaris ‘Pink Muhly Grass’
We love ornamental grasses for a whole host of reasons. They are a wonderful way to add textural elements to your garden; they are relatively low-maintenance, eco-friendly, and help to prevent erosion.
Capillaries, or Muhly grass, also happens to be downright eye-catching. Its billowy pink foliage topped with moonlight white, puffy seed heads look like they are straight out of a fairytale. This particular ornamental grass will bloom in the fall through to early winter, prefers well-draining soil, and full sun to part shade.
These are just a select few favorites from our 2022 bulb catalogue. We hope it was just the inspiration you needed to check ‘order bulb catalogue’ off of your to-do list and start conjuring up the garden of your dreams for the year ahead!
